When your baby was born to the world, they are usually covered in a blanket and only their little heads pop out. You find that it is actually one of the most comfortable things that can happen to them- making them calmer and eager to sleep. Having a baby wrapped in that way is actually known as straddling. This provides maximum comfort to them and it actually soothes them- priming to be calm for many hours.
If you want to know how to swaddle your baby, then you’ve come to the right article. Today, I am going to give you step-by-step instructions on how to properly swaddle your baby.
You must first buy some baby blankets before getting started.
What is Swaddling?
Before I get on with the guide, I must first talk about what it is. Swaddling is actually an age-old technique that was used by our ancestors to keep babies calm. They wrap newborns in a thin cloth or blanket to help them adjust to their life outside of their mothers’ womb.
Swaddling actually provides a lot of benefits, including the prevention of sudden movements that may trigger their starter reflexes, it keeps the baby warm, and it can also help them sleep better as well.
How to Swaddle Using a Blanket?
Swaddling can actually be daunting to do, especially for first-time parents. But, with enough practice and patience, you are going to get the hang of it. Here are the things that you need to do:
1.You must first spread your baby’s blanket flat on the surface- making sure that one of its corners is pointing upward (it should look like a diamond). Then, fold the top corner down at about 5-6 inches.
2.Place your baby face-up on the blanket. Make sure that their head sits above the folded corner and their body should extend straight down toward the lower corner.
3.Then, you want to straighten your baby’s left arm then you should take the left portion of the blanket and use it to wrap over her left arm and chest. The other end should be tucked underneath their other arm and back. After all of the things are done, your baby’s left arm should be completely covered- leaving their right arm free to roam.
4.The bottom portion of the blanket should be folded up to cover your baby’s body and you should also tuck it under the first fold, just under their chin. Next, you want to straighten their right arm and pull the right side of the blanket to cover their body- ensuring that it is tucked underneath the left side of their body.
5.At this point, you want to slowly twist the bottom of the blanket and you want to talk it underneath your baby and that should be it!
Is It Safe?
Swaddling, despite its many criticisms, is actually safe to do, provided that you do it carefully and under the accordance of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ safe sleep guidelines. Using a swaddle blanket while doing the instructions outlined above will ensure that your baby will feel comfy, cozy, and secure.
